Spring Summer 2009

The theme of the first collection is street style and urban culture. It is inspired by the transitional nature of vintage tattoo flashes and henna designs. 2009 heralds the age when fashion and responsibility necessarily intersect and Moksa defines the moment in this wearable collection of denim jeans, jackets, Freedom Tee shirts, organic silk hooded tops and trousers, silk shifts dresses and dress coats. The collection moves effortlessly from day into evening wear, for example the bias cut Peace Silk shift dress can be work with the denim jacket for the day time or gussied up at night with the long silk coat. Peace silk is harvested only after the silk-moth has emerged from its cocoon and flown free.

The silhouette for the collection is fitted but comfortable, the black cotton chintz pants have a natural ride-on waistband and are fitted to the knee but give a little kick, for comfort and style from the knee down. All the outer pieces made of denim or Peace silk are lined in antique sari silk. The shift dresses guarantee comfort as they are cut on the bias and allow a little movement in the natural stretch in the silk, so while they are fitted, they are flattering and highlight the natural curves in a woman’s shape. Measurements for the collection which is produced from a UK size 8 – size 16 have been adjusted to fit the real shape of women today.

In true Rock Star fashion, the organic denim jeans are hand painted and then embellished with new and vintage, recycled beads, silk appliqué, Swarovski crystals and sequins. Much of the embellishment used on Moksa clothing is collected from old evening or bridal wear. Thus, the pieces are layered with stories from someone else’s life, they are infused with an older heritage but their legend continues, on a new piece of fashionable clothing. In the same way, antique sari borders are harvested from old saris and applied onto denim jeans, to give a decidedly goddess-like touch to any hem-line. The motif used on the jeans is inspired by the tree of life and the ten emanations, which represent the different planes, from the highest (Keter) to the earthly, ( Malchut).
